Excess Sweating: An Embarrassing Nuisance

Sweating is a natural physiological condition in all humans. Everyone sweats to a certain extent. By sweating, the body is able to get rid of the excess heat and can control the body temperature. The majority of humans do not sweat all the time, especially  while resting. Sweating is more commonly seen when one exercises or performs any type of strenuous activity. In many cases sweating may occur during an illness or when someone is scared.

However, there are a few individuals who tend to sweat at rest or for no reason at all. These individuals have excessively sweaty hands and are quite aware of it. There are others who simply sweat through their clothes. The clothes may appear damp and soaked. Often the axilla (armpit) or the back may be wet and drenched in sweat making it a very unpleasant feeling for the unfortunate individual.

Excess sweating is also known as hyperhidrosis. The exact number of individuals affected by this disorder remains unknown but it is believed that at least 1 in 20 individuals have some degree of hyperhidrosis. The excess sweating is known to occur in the absence of heat, stress, fever or any emotional trauma. In the majority of cases, no cause is ever found.
